Winter 2010 e-Voter

Co-Presidents’ message:

We are sorry that icy weather conditions caused us to cancel our “Day at the Capitol” twice.  We were looking forward to visiting with Representative Palumbo and observing a House session in action.  However, since March 4th is a lobby day, Nita and I going to Frankfort to join our coalition partners in encouraging members of the Senate to pass HB 70, the Restoration of Voting Rights Act.   We ask you to make this a “virtual” lobby day by calling your Senator on the toll free legislative line 1-800-372-7181 and leaving a message that you want him/her to vote for HB 70.

We are also supporting  two education bills, HB 190 the pre-school education grant program, called Strong Start Kentucky which would help to educate unserved  three and four year old children living at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level, as well as HB 160, the smooth transition from community and technical college to a four-year college bill.  We are supporting HB 408, the environment bill which encourages greater energy efficiency, conservation, and the use of renewable resources to promote energy independence by diversifying the portfolios of energy sources used for generating electricity for Kentucky retail electric customers.  We strongly oppose Senate Bill 26 which eliminates the current requirement that,  prior to construction  of a nuclear plant in Kentucky, the applicant have a strategy for permanent disposal of the waste, and replaces it with only with a requirement for a storage plan.  Finally, we support Senate Bill 25, an election finance bill,  that requires a “527” committee to register with and report to the Registry of Election Finance if it spends more than $5000 to influence the selection of a candidate for public office in KY or more than $5000 on a ballot question  to amend the Constitution of KY.    To find a more detailed description of these bills, please go to the LRC website: http://www.lrc.state.ky.us.  This website also tracks these bills for you as they go through the Legislature.  Please join us on March 4 for our “virtual” “Lobby Day at the Capitol” by calling or emailing your Senator by asking him/her to pass HB 70, the former felons’ voting rights bill.  Thank you!

First Call to Council 2010

We will be holding our one-day State Council meeting on Saturday, April 10, at the Stone Hearth Restaurant in historic Elizabethtown this year.  The Council meeting will commence at 11 am.  After program, budget, and nominations are presented, we will break for a delicious lunch, where our guest speakers will present their views on the 2010 Legislative Session.  We will then resume the business part of the meeting and we expect to conclude by 5 PM.

Every Local League should be represented by its president, as well as two voting delegates, chosen by the membership of their League.  Non-voting delegates are welcome to join us for the luncheon and to interact with other League members from around the state.  Please put this meeting date on your calendar.  Thank you!
