The Kentucky Voter
Summer 2009
Presidents’ Message
Nita Smith and I have begun our new term during a very exciting time for the League of Women Voters. We have just returned from participating in the first Virtual National LWV Council meeting. Instead of going to Washington to vote on the budget, and to listen to plans for advocacy, we attended via our computers at KET (Kentucky Educational Television). We used the KET large screen and speaker phone to attend the meeting. We were able to vote and give our input by typing in our responses and votes on the computer. Members of the KY State Board, as well members of the Lexington, Madison County, and former Paris Leagues also attended the meeting. Although we missed interacting with members from other Leagues, we understand that participating this way was a true money-saver.
Our representatives from National are attending the Health Care Reform debates and are watching closely all legislation that might emanate from them. They are also lobbying for full representation for the citizens of Washington. Other priorities for LWVUS are the National Popular Vote, Global Climate Change, and Membership Recruitment. (go to the LWVUS website: www.lwv.org for more information on National league priorities and advocacy.)
Besides attending the National Council meeting on Saturday, June 13, we also had the first
meeting of the new Board of Directors of the League of Women Voters of Kentucky.
The members of the board discussed our plans for the year and the areas of the program for which we have special interest and for which we will be responsible. (see below).
Our plan is to inform all of the members of the League of upcoming events and legislative “calls to action” where we will ask you to get in touch with your own legislator to inform him/her of our position on a piece of legislation.
